The Massage Therapy Foundation (MTF) works to provide free resources for massage therapists that focus on research, education, and community service—and 2022 won’t be any different. Some projects the MTF anticipates continuing work on include:

Research Agenda

In 2021, MTF evaluated research progress and knowledge gaps within the massage therapy profession, and then put together a team to develop a new research agenda to guide and advance the therapeutic massage knowledge base into the future. The agenda aligns with the United States National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) Strategic Framework.

Keep a look out for research projects based on the agenda, and read more about its development .

Webinars

Free to view and obtain CEs! Learn more about the research, its impact on the profession, and what resources are available to help you better engage. All webinars are recorded, so if you cannot attend live, you will not miss out. Some prior webinar subjects have been hospital-based massage, as well as sports and lymphatic massage. Learn more!

Ergonomics Project

This project aims to develop recommendations for safer massage therapy work. MTF is excited to share information so that therapists from a variety of common workplace environments and massage therapy education programs can enjoy and be examples of career longevity.

Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN)

Are you eager to participate in hands-on research? Now is your opportunity! Professional massage therapists, students, educators, and researchers can help identify and frame research relevant to the clinician and help integrate content into everyday practice. Collaborative projects can lead to educational resources that directly impact massage practices and address the needs of both massage therapists and clients.

Not sure what PBRN entails? Get more information.

Podcast

MTF's Research Perch podcast is designed to help you learn how to use massage therapy research in your practice. Each episode digs into a specific research article or current issue and makes them applicable for everyone’s understanding and use.

Grants & Contests

Apply for the many available research grants awarded to those conducting studies that seek to advance our understanding of specific therapeutic applications and the role of massage therapy in health care delivery. MTF Community Service grants are awarded to charitable organizations that provide massage therapy to people who currently have little or no access to services, while our Student Case Report Contest is a great way to improve student literacy and establish an interest in research. Deadlines range from January–June 2022.

Scientific Journal

The International Journal of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork publishes current, evidence-based content in a free, open-access, peer-reviewed platform.

The Boston Marathon is Back

What fuels all the Foundation’s free resources and available content? Donations and fundraisers, like team RunningForResearch which has raised over $400,000 over the past eight years through the Boston Marathon® as an official Partner of the John Hancock® Non-Profit Program. Consider supporting this year’s team in April 2022 and MTF to help the Foundation continue to grow its programs and bring resources that improve the practice of massage therapy.
