Career Advice from Massage Therapists

We’ve all heard the phrase “hindsight is 20-20,” referring to the clarity that comes with looking back at a situation with a fresh perspective. Now, imagine you have the opportunity to actually share a piece of advice with your younger self. What advice would you give to massage therapists just starting out?

We asked a few massage therapists this exact question. Here are their thoughts:

Corrine Rubida, BS, LMT

“The main thing is to not be afraid! I might have started my own practice right away or fought for higher wages but I was scared so I went to work for someone else and worked long hours for minimal pay. I wish I had been more confident in my ability to go for my dreams right from the start!”

Emilie Alice Palmer, LMT, CLT

“Be confident! Remember to not give up your integrity. You are highly educated and a lifelong learner. You are valued! No other therapist compares to you, and you are unique with your own talents. Do not give up!”

Phil Okazaki, NMT, CMT

“Trust your instincts, open the textbooks, read the materials, make connections, get out of your comfort zone, and meet new people. As you develop as a massage therapist, keep your goals clear; forget about your ego. Every session is about your client, so avoid being critical of yourself if someone doesn’t re-book with you. Have faith in your abilities and the clients that are meant to work with you will find you.”

Dr. Theresa Schmidt, DPT, OCS, LMT

“Protect your hands and learn many gentle interventions to invigorate and relax the body without exerting too much pressure. Take more breaks between massages and offer multimodal treatments to avoid overuse of your hands, such as cupping, movement therapy, assisted stretching and positional release. Explore effective business development and marketing skills and get a mentor before venturing out on your own. Have fun!”
