5 Tips to Get You Ready For The New Year

NO. 1—TACKLE THE CLUTTER.

Whether at your home or in your office, things accumulate throughout the year. Take some time at the start of the new year to clear out old files both paper and digital—and tidy up both your home and office space. Consider creating save, recycle, resell, shred, and donate piles so you can easily determine what you’re going to do with items you no longer need. Refreshing your space can help you relax more at home and reenergize your commitment to your practice and clients.

NO. 2—YEAR IN REVIEW.

This tip isn’t new, and there’s a reason for that—it works. Doing an annual review of your year makes good sense because you’ll begin to understand what has been working and what hasn’t, where you might need to double down on your effort and where you can back off. Take some time at the start of every new year to review your business plan and make adjustments where necessary. Did you plan for the client load you have or do you need to adjust that number up or down? Are you hitting your financial goals or do you need to refigure your bottom line? Take the time to review your budget to make sure your spending is on track. If you carry debt, especially if it’s on credit cards, try to make a plan to pay it down to avoid interest. Make saving easy by setting up an automatic savings plan if available to give you some cushion during times of economic uncertainty. Don’t forget your website and other digital marketing assets. The start of a new year is a great time to refresh your website, and explore your social media presence and newsletter performance to assess engagement and tweak where necessary.

NO. 3—START A NEW ROUTINE.

If New Year resolutions don’t work for you, you’re not alone. Sometimes, committing to adding one new routine to your daily or weekly schedule can have the same impact. Coming off the holiday season is a great time to think about adding a gratitude practice to your self-care regimen, or joining a gym or starting a yoga class. If you need to boost your business, pushing yourself to attend one networking event a month might be a good choice, or find a book club to join where you can meet new people (and potential clients) while also fostering a hobby you enjoy. A new routine might be the springboard to the personal and professional growth you're looking for this year.

NO. 4—OUT WITH THE OLD.

Starting a new routine can help jumpstart your new year, but so can letting go of what’s not working. When we’ve invested time and perhaps some money into something—like budgeting software, a workout machine or, a marketing idea—admitting it’s not working and letting go can be difficult. But sometimes that’s exactly what needs to be done in order to move forward and make room for new ideas and practices. Take stock of what is working and what isn’t working for you, both personally and professionally, and if something hasn’t been working, consider letting it go without guilt.

NO. 5—ENVISION THE YEAR AHEAD.

Vision boards are a good way to have a visible reminder of your goals throughout the year and are relatively easy to make with a few simple supplies. Perhaps one of the hardest parts is getting started. Don’t limit yourself when thinking about what goals you have for yourself and your practice. Ask yourself broad questions that can help you really dig in and dream big, like “When am I happiest?” and “What is my ideal client?” From there, you can start getting specific about your goals—and creative with your vision board.
