What Is the AMC?

Editor's note: A description of AMC was left out of the May 2010 article that described insurance offerings from AMTA and ABMP.

The American Massage Council (AMC) is comprised of over 21,000 members and is based in Santa Ana, Calif. Its principal purpose is to provide massage malpractice insurance to massage therapists nationwide.

Philip Stump, president of AMC said, "The program was originally founded in 1986 to provide malpractice insurance to chiropractic doctors and massage therapists. To provide a sharper focus on the particular needs of massage therapists in the U.S., the AMC was split off separately in the year 2000. The goal was to be the lowest cost provider in the country. We provide $1,000,000/$3,000,000 worth of coverage for $99."

AMC also makes coverage available for premises liability, hot stone and lava stone massages, hydrotherapy, cupping, taping, coverage for Reiki, Upledger and Rolfing practitioners.

AMC is the officially endorsed program for the Florida State Massage Therapy Association.
