Wisconsin Law Creates Credentialing Board, Mandates Licensure

Wisconsin Governor James Doyle signed Assembly Bill 588 (known as the "2009 Wisconsin Act 355") into law May 13, 2010.

The law creates a seven-member Massage Therapy and Bodywork Therapy Affiliated Credentialing Board and requires those who practice massage to obtain a license by the end of the year.

Under current law, a person may be certified as a massage therapist or bodyworker by the Department of Regulation and Licensing. Effective December 2010, the new law will transfer rule-making powers from the Department of Regulation and Licensing to the new Credentialing Board.

From the bill's analysis: "The bill directs the board to license, not certify, persons who fulfill the requirements for licensure as massage therapists or bodyworker therapists."

For Wisconsin therapists who already have a state certificate, you may renew for a license on Feb. 28, 2011. No additional procedures are required to obtain a license.
