New York Group Holds Annual Conference

By Editorial Staff

The New York State Society of Medical Massage Therapists recently held its annual conference Nov. 10-13 at the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson, N.Y. Located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, the conference provided a wide range of educational opportunities designed to enhance the skills of Society members.

Of particular interest was a clinical symposium in CranioSacral Therapy conducted by CST developer and Massage Today columnist Dr. John E. Upledger and certified advanced practitioner Dr. Lisa Upledger. Working in multiple-hands sessions on two clients, the Drs. Upledger described the CST techniques as they were applied, and answered questions from attendees specific to each session.

Workshops available to attendees included "CranioSacral Therapy Overview," presented by Jill Mabry, LMT, CST-D; "Lymph Drainage Therapy Overview," presented by Mya Breman, LMT, MSW, CST-D; "Visceral Manipulation Overview," by Kenneth Frey, PT, CST-D; "Medical Massage for the Cancer Patient," by Wendy Miner, LMT; and "Stretches to Relieve Low-Back Stiffness," by Kerrie Flynn, LMT.

The conference keynote, "The Big Picture, The Role of Massage Therapy in Today's Integrated Care," was presented by Massage Today editor Cliff Korn. In his Saturday night keynote speech, Korn shared many encouraging words with his audience.

"Our diversity is a wonderful thing for the populations we serve. They benefit greatly from our varied thought processes, techniques and backgrounds," Korn said. "My own vision of the massage therapy field is that it will continue to expand in breadth and depth. Massage therapy will become not only more firmly entrenched in clinical and hospital-based health care, but also more skilled in the special techniques and concerns of the spa industry. I see a need for only a few small steps before the public at large sees massage therapists as worthy somatic problem-solvers."

The New York State Society of Medical Massage Therapists is a not-for-profit organization, whose purpose is the education and advancement of the massage therapy profession. The organization was incorporated under the laws of the state of New York in 1927 as the New York Society of Medical Masseurs, Inc., and was changed in 1986 to the New York State Society of Medical Massage Therapists, Inc.
