ISPA Hosts 13th Annual Conference

By Editorial Staff

The International Spa Association (ISPA) held its conference Oct. 13-16, 2003, at the Wyndham Anatole hotel in Dallas. Now in its 13th year, the annual conference provided a wealth of educational and networking opportunities for conference attendees, as well as over 300 product and informational booths, and auctions with proceeds going to spa research and educational initiatives.

The conference featured four prominent keynote speakers at each of the general sessions, including Dr.

Kenneth Cooper, founder of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, who spoke on fitness, nutrition and supplements; Bruce Rector, leadership coach and author of "Monday Morning Messages," a motivational book series, who delivered a speech on leadership styles; author Dr. Bertice Berry, who spoke on balancing home and career; and best-selling author Robert Spector, who shared his thoughts on the importance of customer service.

Dr. Cooper was also honored with ISPA's 2003 Alex Szekely Humanitarian Award, named after the late Alex Szekely, former ISPA president and longtime member of the ISPA board of directors. Dr. Cooper, whose 1968 book "Aerobics" led to a worldwide fitness revolution, was recognized for his contributions to the international physical fitness movement.

Others recognized for their achievements included Jane Segerberg, spa consultant and three-term ISPA president, who received the ISPA 2003 Dedicated Contributor Award; and Frank van Putten, founder of SpaSmart, Inc., who was honored with the 2003 Visionary Award for dedicating his career to promoting the spa industry.

ISPA also released its 2003 Spa-Goer Study at the conference, which was available for purchase by attendees. The study focuses on different aspects of the spa consumer, including demographics, motivation and expectations. The 2004 ISPA conference will be held Nov. 8-11, 2004, at The Venetian hotel in Las Vegas. For more information on ISPA, visit www.experienceispa.com.
